Embroidered doilies have been around for generations. Our Grandmothers did it all by hand, and it was so beautiful. I still have a tablecloth embroidered by my aunty.
Now you can buy doilies already made to embroider with a transfer pattern, some will come with the crochet edging already done for you as well. These may have a colored pattern with colored threads attached which depict which colors to use on the various patterns.
Here are a few stitches that may be more useful than others:
